Oklahoma E-Bike Laws
Oklahoma's three-class electric-assisted bicycle law gives riders the rights and duties of bicyclists with no licence, registration, title or insurance; Class 1 and 2 are allowed on paths unless the path authority prohibits them, Class 3 is barred from paths by default and from operation by anyone under 16, and the statute imposes no helmet requirement.
Oklahoma regulates electric-assisted bicycles under a three-class system defined at 47 O.S. § 1-104: Class 1 provides pedal assistance only, up to 20 mph; Class 2 has a motor that may be used exclusively to propel the bicycle, up to 20 mph; Class 3 provides pedal assistance only, up to 28 mph, and must be equipped with a speedometer. Motors are limited to 750 watts. Riders have the rights and duties of bicycle riders, and electric-assisted bicycles are exempt from Oklahoma's financial responsibility, vehicle insurance, driver license, vehicle registration and certificate-of-title provisions. Class 1 and Class 2 e-bikes may be ridden on bicycle or multiuse paths where bicycles are permitted, though the local authority or state agency with jurisdiction over a path may prohibit them. A Class 3 e-bike may NOT be ridden on a bicycle or multiuse path unless the path is within or adjacent to a highway or roadway, or the authority over the path permits that operation. No person under 16 may operate a Class 3 e-bike; a person under 16 may ride as a passenger on a Class 3 designed to accommodate passengers.
