Michigan state parks and recreation areas bar drone operation that interferes with staff or search-and-rescue, occurs near cultural/historical sites or named viewing platforms, occurs over beaches, equestrian facilities, campgrounds or restrooms, crosses an aerial right-of-way, or is commercial without written DNR permission.
Under Land Use Order of the Director 5.1(5)-(6), issued by the Michigan DNR, a person may not launch an unmanned aircraft from state-managed park or recreation-area land, or operate one in a manner that: interferes with department employees or designees performing official duties, or with search-and-rescue operations; occurs within 100 yards of a cultural or historical site or structure; occurs upon or over the viewing platform at Tahquamenon Falls State Park or the platform at Palms Book State Park; occurs over an occupied beach area, an equestrian facility, a campground, or a restroom/open-air changing court; occurs over an area subject to an aerial right-of-way; or is for a commercial purpose without first obtaining written permission from an authorized department representative under Michigan Administrative Code R 299.922(dd).
